Pain Melts Away

Floating has been proven to be a highly effective tool for reducing chronic pain. In addition to relieving pain during the session, it has also been shown to have significant lasting effects. Because of the extremely buoyant environment, floating reverses the effects of gravity, relieving pressure, relaxing muscles and providing relief from painful conditions. Another contributor to pain relief is that floating has been shown to stimulate the brain to naturally release large amounts of endorphins: painkilling, substances known to create euphoria and pain relief similar to opiates. Among the issues that floating has been effectively used include:

  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back Pain
  • Sports Injuries
  • Pregnancy Discomfort

While floating requires no effort, research has shown that there are ways to increase the effectiveness of floating through visualization and other techniques. Learn more about how to use floating for pain relief.

Testimonials and Research on Floating and Pain Reduction

In Phoenix, Arizona, seventeen former manual laborers who had suffered disabling injuries that were intractable to surgery, many of them victims of chronic pain, were put through a sixty hour therapy course that centered on immersion in flotation tanks. After the floating regimen, fourteen of them were able to return to work — many for the first time in years —with remission of pain, and recoveries the men’s employer called “on the order of miraculous.” Psycho physiologist Harold Cahn, Ph.D., of Wellness Research Associates, claims that a follow up after two years confirms the remission.

“If you are suffering chronic back pain, headaches, or some other painful condition, floating can be apart of your pain management program. According to Gib Koula, program coordinator at Stress LabServices at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Appleton, Wisconsin.

Researchers have found that when floatation is used as a primary method of relaxation training, chronic pain conditions improved.

‘Gratefully, this special painkilling effect continues after you step out of the Tank. Without outside stimulation you can zero in on your breathing, heart rate, and muscle tension. This feedback helps you learn how to deeply relax and alter bodily functions at will for the times you need pain relief when you are not floating,’ says Koula.
