the biofeedback explanationIn the past it had been thought that many unconscious elements of body function such as brain waves, blood pressure, hormones, smooth muscle tension, etc, were not consciously controllable. In the 1970’s biofeedback machines were developed which allowed individuals to concentrate on subtle changes in the body and see them amplified by the machine. By seeing and responding to the visible results, people could “train” themselves to exercise control over these types of bodily functions. Through research in the use of this tool, it is now believed that we have control of every cell in our bodies. Biofeedback works by isolating attention on to one single focus. The effects are enhances with deep relaxation. One of the limitations of biofeedback machines is the stressful nature of the device itself. Floating is in essence a biofeedback machine with the advantage of deep relaxation as a natural occurrence. With all external stimuli removed, the floater is free to deeply relax and focus on whatever change is desired. The stimuli free environment also aids in feeling the results of these changes even when subtle.
