the brain wave explanationThe brain has four “speeds”, generating waves at different rates depending on activities and alertness. Our waking hours are dominated by Beta waves, the fastest and most active. As the brain waves slow down, there is a heightened level of calmness and relaxation. Alpha is the most commonly known relaxed state; however, it is the next level, Theta that is associated with such expanded levels of awareness experienced by Zen Monks. This state of heightened relaxed alertness is experienced by everyone twice a day, as we are drifting form consciousness into sleep and upon waking. This is a very suggestible state and it also gives us access to vivid memories, sudden insights, solutions to problems and great inspiration and feelings of peace. The problem is that it is difficult to sustain this optimum point without falling asleep or completely waking up. Floating has been document to generate the Theta brain waves while the floater remains conscious and alert and aware of the process. This allows the floater the benefits of Zen monks without the years of training. It has also been shown that Theta waves are enhanced and more easily generated for up to three weeks after the float.
