the left-brain right-brain explanation

The main part of the brain is divided into two hemispheres connected by a thick bundle of nerves.  By disconnecting these nerves, scientists have discovered that the two parts of the brain, Left and Right have fundamentally different roles. The Left Brain functions analytically, sequentially and in linear time. It is our detail, reasoning and logical mind and controls verbal speech. The Right Brain on the other hand, is non-linear, creative, simultaneous and intuitive. It is our imagination, it helps us identify patterns and gives us the overview.  As scientists have studied the brain, they have come to see how these divisions influence functioning and perception. In our culture, the left brain is developed and trained much more strongly than the right brain. Our educational system is based on rewarding logical thinking and detail memorization – left brain specialties.

Research showing EEG measurements indicates that the right brain becomes more active during floating sessions, releasing creative energy and intuitive insight.  This is important given our left-dominated culture, however what is most beneficial is the balancing of the two hemispheres. By awakening and strengthening the right hemisphere, balance occurs which is optimum for vitality and wellness. Floating does not minimize the left brain but rather changes it’s dominate role to one of cooperative partnership with the right brain. In addition, it has been shown that the optimum states of conscious such as those accessed during deep meditation and floating involve what is called “hypersynchrony” of the two halves of the brain.
